HOPE shortcut online course

I find  the following online course is useful to manage PD symptoms based on a different perspective to PD.

The HOPE Shortcut Online Course is a self-help program created by Lilian Sjøberg for people with chronic illnesses—especially Parkinson’s disease—who want to explore whether reducing stress and addressing emotional patterns can lessen their symptoms.

Main idea

The course is built around the hypothesis that symptoms of Parkinson’s disease and some other chronic conditions are strongly influenced by accumulated stress, trauma, and learned stress responses. It proposes that by understanding these connections and systematically reducing stress, people may be able to decrease symptom severity.

The acronym HOPE stands for:

  • H – Hope
    • Develop the belief that symptoms can improve.
    • Reconsider conventional assumptions that chronic diseases inevitably worsen.
    • Topics include stress, placebo/nocebo effects, exercise, and body memory.
  • O – Observe symptoms
    • Keep a diary for several weeks.
    • Track fluctuations in symptoms and identify situations associated with symptom peaks.
    • Learn to recognize that symptoms may vary rather than remain constant.
  • P – Pacify symptoms
    • Learn four broad strategies that the author believes people worldwide use to recover or improve from chronic illnesses.
    • Participants are encouraged to select and apply strategies that fit their circumstances.
  • E – Engage
    • Develop motivation, persistence, and practical tools to continue the process of stress reduction and symptom management.
